Officially established in June 2000, the APEC Research Center of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, a third APEC Research Center formally approved by Chinese Government, is an institution focusing its research activities on APEC and relevant issues.

By conducting research on the APEC development with emphasis on organizational evolvement and the APEC’s role in the process of Asia-Pacific cooperation, the Center supplies policy proposals to Chinese government for its deeply engaging in APEC activities and serves Shanghai People Municipal Government for its further opening-up and economic development. The policy and academic research activities on the APEC process and China’s role, is mainly conducted through the experts of the Academy and in collaboration with domestic and international experts.

The Center’s current research tasks are mainly covering APEC’s tenet and spirit, its practices and orientation, facilitating economic and technical cooperation, sustainable growth and equitable development. Meanwhile, the Center is actively providing consulting and training services for local cardres and people about APEC and APEC 2001 Shanghai Meeting.

The Center’s organizational structure and functions are as follows:

1： In the organization chart, Zhou Jianming is Director, and Wang Shaopu, Li Xiaogang and You Anshan are deputy directors; Cai Penghong is Secretary General and Wang Hailiang is Deputy Secretary General.

2：Center may set up some function divisions for the purpose of research, with which senior research fellows need to be engaged with special arrangement from both inside and outside the Academy.

3：The Secretariat of the Center is within the Institute of Asia Pacific Research, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

The funds of the Center’s research and activities are partially supported from Chinese government. This is a non-beneficial research institution and all financial income has been used for research. The Center appreciates donators home and abroad for their generosity.
